| Abstract | A group of 119 children in Sweden were followed from infancy to age 8 to determine the relationship between type of child care children received and their later development. At the age of 8, children were given aptitude tests and were rated by teachers on school performance and social and personal development. A number of background variables were also considered. Results showed that, in most aspects, type of child care had an independent explanation power for children's cognitive and social development. However, the group of children who were placed in day care during their first or second year of life and remained there until the start of school, was generally rated more favorably by teachers and performed better on aptitude tests than all other groups. Some relationships between type of child care and family type were found, and the mother's satisfaction with the child care was found to be an important prediction variable.
